There is a growing concern  throughout the world that the natural resources essential for human development and survival, are being depleted and destroyed at an alarming and ever increasing pace. The earth is the only place in the Universes, which is known to sustain life. It has now begun to be realize that the earth’s are to be managed on the basic principle of sustainability. It is, therefore, necessary to plan development activities in such a manner that the precious environment is conserved not only for the present but also for the future generation also.

Nature has been particularly generous in hers gift of sylvan treasures to the state of Sikkim. Luxuriant forest, abound in all part of state and variety of medicinal plants, herbs, shrubs, Bamboo, NTFP’s and trees growing in state is truly rich. In the forest, there are number of plants whose medicinal values have been well recognized by local people as well as by different Pharmaceutical, insecticidal and perfumery sectors. But, very little efforts have been made to develop the medicinal plants and NTFP’s in the past. There are many mores such plants which have not yet been recognized and they may have some potential of medicinal values to be used in various ailments.

Medicinal plants ought to be given the status of a “National Resources” because their sustained availability is essential to sustain one of the world’s oldest medicinal traditions, a priceless legacy of the Indian people. It may make a substantial condition to our economy and employment generation as well. Conservation and development of the country’s medicinal flora will not only serve national interest but also serve global needs, since there is growing worldwide demand for natural medicines

Sikkim Himalaysas is bestowed with abundant medicinal plants, herbs, shrubs, bamboo, and medicinal plants. More then 242 species of medicinal plants are reported to be found in the state. The local inhabitants for treatment of various ailments use numerous herbal remedies. Further more modern medicines owes to the flora of these mountains. Many inhabitants for treatment of various ailments use numerous herbal remedies. Further more modern medicines owes to the flora of these mountains. Many species of Himalayan origin have revolutainized the allopathic systems of medicine. There is urgent need to have a specific programme on medicinal plants:  There is urgent need to have a specific programme on medicinal plants: Research and Development Programme for in-situ and ex-situ conservation, establish Germ Plasm Bank, inventorisation and documentation of traditional knowledges, Database and development of Agro-cultivation techniques etc. for the Himalayan Regions

Geographical location and physio graphical features like altitutional variations contribute  to the Bamboo diversity and the distribution of species in different bio-climatic region of state. Bamboo belongs to the grass family poaceae (gramineae). In country there are 15 indigenous as well as exotic species of bamboo belonging to 23 genera. North-Eastern region of country has over 50% of bamboo species. The N-E region is the centre of genetic diversity for the species of genera Bambusa, Dendrocalamus, Arundinaria and ceplostachyum. In the state of Sikkim it is reported that approx. 26 species of Bamboo of 10 genes are found, which are distributed according to altitude and soil variation. Phyllostachys edulis has been introduce in Sikkim an its results are encouraging.

Conservationand development of medicinal plants, herbs, Bamboo & NTFP’s should aim at a comprehensive strategy to include Research, Technology, identification, collection, storage & Preservation, sustainable utilization, sustained availability restoration due to habitat destruction and over exploitation.

Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP’s) have always been and will continue to be an important element of the forests resources. The role of bamboo, an NTFP in the economy of the state is of utmost importance. Better management techniques and sustained effort by the Forest Department is essential for improving the production of Bamboo.A major intervention is also required by authorities at the marketing stage. There is need to build up the capability of the community and provide the infrastructural and monetary support so as to enable them to control the market price. This could be achieved only with the co-operation of the community concerned and mutual effort is the true spirit of participatory management (JFM, FDA, & EDC). It is essential for the communities to understand the need for sustainable utilization of these NTFP’s medicinal plants, herbs etc. in the Forest areas and outside as well. It is only then these areas would be capable of sustaining there needs and would continue be a source of livelihood for the entire community.

Recent rural development thinking places for greater emphasis an employment and economic upliftment in rural areas  an area for policy concern. The forestry should become a part of the total development efforts and it must integrate itself into that efforts. It is true that forestry and forest-related activities have a special potential for employment generation and economic upliftment in rural areas, if the technological aspects are approximately handed. If this is acted upon in a socially sensitive way, the employment created a results could be substantial. In a state like Sikkim where more than 82% of geographical area is under Forestry and use, there is abundance of NTFP’s  like medicinal plants, herbs, flowers, bamboos etc. it should play an important roles in the rural development.
